Each year, Willowsford Conservancy’s Deer Management Program helps maintain a healthy balance of the deer population across Conservancy property in support of land stewardship and community well-being. Managing deer densities reduces damage to native vegetation, agricultural areas, and residential landscapes, while supporting a healthier herd and stronger habitat for other wildlife. The Conservancy recognizes ongoing resident concerns related to deer impacts on landscaping and property and continues to evaluate how the program can best address those impacts while maintaining safety and stewardship standards.

The 2025–26 season, which concluded in January, resulted in 111 deer harvested. This total is consistent with harvest levels in recent years and reflective of a highly regulated program with defined access areas and seasonal conditions. The program is carried out by trained volunteer hunters, many of whom are Willowsford residents. In addition to time spent in the stand, participants complete volunteer hours supporting broader Conservancy land stewardship projects, directly contributing to the care of our shared landscapes. All participants operate under state and county regulations, as well as the Conservancy’s established safety and program guidelines.

While annual harvest totals naturally fluctuate based on weather patterns, food availability and deer movement, year-to-year consistency indicates a stable program operating as designed.

Beyond stewardship efforts on Conservancy property, the program also supports the wider community. Twenty-four deer were donated to local food access organizations, extending the program’s impact beyond Willowsford.

Looking ahead to the 2026–27 season, the Conservancy is focused on expanding resident engagement and strengthening the program. Applications will prioritize residents, with planned enhancements including a training opportunity in partnership with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, and we are hoping to pilot a mentorship program for those interested in gaining experience.

With a limited number of openings each year, the Deer Management Program offers residents a meaningful way to directly support responsible, community-driven land stewardship. Applications for the 2026-27 season will open later in March and will be shared through the Conservancy website, newsletter, and HOA communications.
