This week is Amphibian Week! 🐸 We’re celebrating frogs, toads, and salamanders that call Willowsford home.

Photo 1: A slimy salamander. These are a species of “lungless” salamanders and breathe through their skin!
Photo 2: Wood frog, this species is the only frog species that lives north of the arctic circle due to a unique “antifreeze” substance they produce to withstand freezing temps.
Photo 3: A wood frog egg mass. The clear gelatinous coatings protect the eggs and keep them moist as they grow into tadpoles.
Photo 4: Spring peeper, these little frogs get LOUD during the spring mating season with calls as loud as 90 decibels.
Photo 5: Eastern newt in its juvenile “eft” stage. Its bright color signals to predators that it is toxic!

We scraped 1,826 spotted lantern fly egg masses yesterday! That means we prevented 10s of thousands of this invasive bug from hatching. We also tagged over 100 tree of heaven (their host tree). Thank you to all the amazing volunteers (over 30) who spent their Saturday morning with us in The Greens.

The Conservancy and @willowsfordlife joined forces to participate in the second Scrape for the Grape (a partnership of Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance @visitloudoun @loudounwine and @vceloudoun). We were joined by lots of residents and we enjoyed making new friends from @broadlandsassociation and @villageashburn. If you missed us yesterday, there is another chance to help reduce this summer’s SPL population - April 12. Visit LIRA’s website.

Thank you to our friends at Blue Ridge Wildlife Center for joining us at the Boat House this week! Attendees were able to learn about native wildlife and get up close and personal with some of their animal ambassadors.

Thanks to all who donated their Christmas trees to us! We ended up with a 24 trees. 🌲

Many of these trees will be going into Cedar Pond in the Greens within the next week or two. Once submerged, the tree will provide shelter to support macroinvertebrates, aquatic vegetation, and small fish. 🐟 The ultimate result? A more dynamic and resilient aquatic ecosystem that supports biodiversity!
