Greetings from the Farm,
Our garlic is growing! We planted before the winter began and this warm weather has been moving things right along. As we get a little closer to the CSA (and those delicious garlic scapes), it’s a great time to learn about the garlic growing process at Willowsford Farm.
Growing the Good Stuff: Our garlic is planted at the Grange Farm, after the chickens cleared the plot and infused the soil with nitrogen, the cloves themselves were planted in the ground. If you are interested in our garlic planting method, you can check out our video of Farmer Rachel on our Facebook and Instagram. Covered with hay to keep them warm, the garlic has been working hard to get a little bigger through the winter. We’re entering the green or spring garlic phase, while you could harvest now, similar to spring onions, we’ll be leaving our babies in the ground and monitoring for any sign of pests and disease. The next phase has the garlic forming scapes, the curly beginnings of the flowering process. Scapes are edible and delicious, cutting them helps to redirects the plant’s energy from seeding and flowering back into making the bulb. This way you get to enjoy the scapes and bigger and better bulbs of garlic! When we are closer to harvest, we’ll have a follow up piece on the rest of the garlic life-cycle. Until then, keep your eyes on social media as we track our garlic throughout the spring!
Counting our Eggs: Our Off-Season Retail trial is in full swing! We’re excited to gauge the level of interest in this program, and help relieve some of the…tension around egg availability. You can still place an order until 3pm Friday, for pick up at the Farm on Saturday!
Meet and Greet: Miss the last Meet The Farmer? We’ll be hosting a Meet the Farmer on March 8th at the Willowsford Boathouse in the Greens . These events are a great way to learn more about Willowsford Farm, our practices and the Farm crew! You can sign up for one of our events here.
