This deciduous shrub prefers acidic, moist soils and can be found naturally in wet meadows, boggy areas, marshes, and fields. Pinkish purple flowers are arranged around terminal spikes on the plant from mid-summer to early autumn. This native is great along walkways and can create a nice natural low hedge. White-tail deer tend to avoid this species because the foliage has a bitter taste, they may browse but the plant will quickly bounce back. Spreads well through suckering.
