Yesterday’s Aquatic Wildlife Discovery program was a blast! 💦 Participants got an introduction to stream monitoring and caught an assortment of critters among the rocks. The types and quantities of these creatures tell us a lot about the overall health of the stream. We found plenty of macroinvertebrates like crawfish and insect larvae as well as some invertebrates like minnows and a salamander!

This location is just off of Route 50 in Chantilly, perfect for those in the 20105 and 20152 zip codes! You'll have the opportunity to pick up your share between 11 AM - 3 PM. We're excited to work with another fitness center that has a passion for health and wellness. Thanks to all who joined us yesterday for our Butterfly Walk with Anne Ellis of @loudounwildlife! 🦋 We saw 15 spectacular species of butterfly including spicebush swallowtails, a monarch, a viceroy, eastern tailed blues, and silver spotted skippers! The warm and slightly overcast weather made it a great day for not only seeing butterflies, but photographing them as well. 📸

It's garlic 🧄 and onion 🧅 season at Willowsford Farm! The Farm Team has been hard at work harvesting these delicious bulbs and it's now on to the next step in the process: curing. Curing is the simple process of drying them down for better storage. The garlic is strung up from the rafters in the greenhouse while the onions are spread out on tables below. On hot days the smell can be strong but it's essential to cure for a two week minimum. The garlic and onions in the share this week are "uncured" so we recommend using them sooner rather than later - yum!

These beautiful bulbs will need some time to cure before they hit our Farm Stand (and virtual) shelves, but that doesn't stop them from looking and smelling amazing right now! Some of these are huge! Our 2024 Hiking Spree drew to a close last week, THANK YOU to all who participated! 🥾 We had such a great time seeing so many of you get outside and explore Willowsford. We loved seeing your photos and hearing the stories of your hikes with each submission.

While the spree may be over for now, let’s continue to explore, share our adventures, and appreciate the natural beauty of our community!

This is our last Farm Stand and CSA pickup before the 4th of July, so don't miss the chance to grab FRESH ONIONS #alsoagamechanger, peaches (for fresh eating or grilling #yumtown), cherry toms, quinoa for sides, mint for fancy drinks, garlic scapes for everything, all the cheese and crackers, flowers for your table, and maybe old kohlrabi because I've seen your golf swing.

Nesting season is in full swing! 🪺 So far our boxes have been fairly productive along our three trails. Our newest nest box trail in The Grant has been particularly busy. It has already fledged 15+ blue birds, 20+ tree swallows, and there are plenty more on the way!

Thank you to all our volunteers who take the time to monitor these nests to ensure the best chance of success! We’re always welcoming new volunteers to support this program, send us a message if you’re interested.

Summer is here and milkweed is abloom nearly everywhere we look! From the bright tangerine-colored blooms of butterfly weed (picture 1) to the classic pink clusters of flowers of common milkweed (picture 2), there’s no shortage of diversity in this genus. What do they all have in common? They all thrive in the summer heat and are some of the best pollinator friendly plants around. We all know how monarchs depend on milkweed, but bees and other butterfly species LOVE it as well. 🐝 Between their beauty, heat tolerance, and the beneficial insects they bring, they are a must have in any garden. We still have a small selection left in our greenhouse, order now from our online store to snag one before they’re all gone! Link in bio.

(P.S. Milkweed even smells good! Swamp milkweed (picture 3) is said to smell like vanilla and cotton candy. Swing by the Wet Meadow in the Grange to give it a sniff and see what you think!)
