The Willowsford Conservancy and HOA are members of Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance (LIRA) and are joining forces to participate in their second annual Scrape for the Grape. LIRA has partnered with Visit Loudoun, the Loudoun Wineries and Winegrowers Association, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension and sponsor Amazon Web Services to bring this volunteer event to multiple sites all over the county on two different dates. WIllowsford will participate on Saturday, March 29, from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Bull Run Overlook Trailhead and Obstacle Course in The Greens.

The invasive spotted lanternfly (SLF) was seen all over Willowsford last summer attracted to the also invasive Tree of Heaven, where it typically lays its eggs. Once in an area, SLF move on to grape vines and fruit trees, so this event is critical to help reduce the pressure from spotted lanternflies here in our community, our Farm, and also on rural Loudoun’s vineyards and orchards.

Why Participate?

  • Be part of one of Loudoun’s most popular volunteer events in 2025 – 1,000 volunteers!
  • Create awareness of invasive species while helping our rural economy
  • Family friendly and fun, while getting educated about the SLF!
  • Volunteers receive commemorative t-shirts, scrapers and bandanas
  • 20 wineries participating in a “weekend of gratitude”, offering special promotions for volunteers
  • Mom’s Apple Pie is providing special SLF shaped cookies for the kids
  • A great way for high school students or scouts to get volunteer hours
