Solar Eclipse Viewing Event

Join conservancy staff at the Willowsford Boat House to watch the solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024!

What is a solar eclipse? 

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, obscuring the sun. During a solar eclipse, the moon will cast a shadow on the earth and the sky will darken. Solar eclipses are rare astronomical events and this is the last solar eclipse that will cross the United States until 2044.

Things to know:

• We are located outside the path of totality and will experience a partial eclipse. In our area, the eclipse will be 0.9 magnitude, meaning 90% of the sun’s diameter will be covered. While the moon will not totally block out the sun, it is still a very cool and worthwhile sight to see!
• During a partial eclipse, it is not safe to look at the sun without proper eye protection. We will provide eclipse glasses that can be shared to view the eclipse safely, we have a limited number so if you have some, bring them! 
• Rain and clouds may make it hard, or impossible, to experience the eclipse. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for clear skies!
• Bring chairs or blankets to relax on the lawn behind the Boat House as we wait for the eclipse!

Eclipse Timeline: 

• The eclipse will begin right around 2:03pm, this is when the moon first starts to cover the sun.
• The maximum will occur at 3:19pm. This is when the largest part of the sun will be covered and the best time to experience the eclipse. 
• The eclipse will end at 4:23pm.
