SUMMARY:Volunteer Workshop: Tree of Heaven/Spotted Lanternfly
DESCRIPTION:Join Conservancy staff and board member Jack Nash\, who is active with the Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance (LIRA)\, for a hands-on volunteer workshop. We will provide an overview of the invasive spotted lanternfly and their preferred host tree – Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). We will share what the Conservancy is doing to tackle these two invasive pests. Attendees will work with us to identify\, tag\, and measure Tree of Heaven in an area with a large grouping of these trees. We will also try to remove as many spotted lanternflies from the area as possible. The tactics and tools that we use in the workshop can then be used by attendees to help us locate and tag as many ToH as possible. This survey work enables the Conservancy team to develop and plan for future ToH removal. Everyone will go home with a kit to use near their homes.  \nAttendees of all ages are encouraged to attend. The workshop takes place on a day when LCPS is closed. This is a great way for high school students to get a jump start on volunteer hours. Kids are welcome to attend\, and we ask that children under 14 are accompanied by a parent or guardian.  \nSince we will be walking in the woods\, we recommend wearing long pants and sturdy closed-toe shoes. All participants must sign our volunteer waiver which can be electronically signed here. For attendees under the age of 18\, a parent or guardian must sign it. \nWhy Participate? \n\nLearn about two invasive pests – Tree of Heaven and Spotted Lanternfly\nHelp us identify the sizes and locations of the ToH to inform our invasive vegetation removal efforts\nLearn about methods to kill Spotted Lanternfly that will not harm helpful pollinators\nTake a toolkit and tips home to replicate these efforts in your own neighborhood (each participants will leave with a spray bottle and toolkit)\nFamily friendly and fun\, while getting educated about ToH and SLF!\nA great way for high school students or scouts to get volunteer hours\n\nRSVP below for this FREE event \n** If you cannot attend the event and would like a spray bottle and toolkit\, we will have them available at the Boat House Farm Stand on August 28 from 4 PM to 6 PM.

SUMMARY:Scrape for the Grape
DESCRIPTION:The Willowsford Conservancy and HOA are members of the Loudoun Invasive Removal Alliance (LIRA) and are joining forces to participate in LIRA’s second annual Scrape for the Grape. LIRA has partnered with Visit Loudoun\, the Loudoun Wineries and Winegrowers Association\, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension and sponsor Amazon Web Services to bring this volunteer event to multiple sites all over the county on two different dates. Willowsford will participate on Saturday\, March 29\, from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Bull Run Overlook Trailhead and Obstacle Course in The Greens. \nThe invasive spotted lanternfly (SLF) was seen all over Willowsford last summer attracted to the also invasive Tree of Heaven\, where it typically lays its eggs. Once in an area\, SLF move on to grape vines and fruit trees\, so this event is critical to help reduce the pressure from spotted lanternflies here in our community\, our Farm\, and also on rural Loudoun’s vineyards and orchards. \nWhy Participate? \n\nBe part of one of Loudoun’s most popular volunteer events in 2025 – 1\,000 volunteers!\nCreate awareness of invasive species while helping our rural economy\nFamily friendly and fun\, while getting educated about the SLF!\nVolunteers receive commemorative t-shirts\, scrapers and bandanas\n20 wineries participating in a “weekend of gratitude”\, offering special promotions for volunteers\nMom’s Apple Pie is providing special SLF shaped cookies for the kids\nA great way for high school students or scouts to get volunteer hours\n\nClick to learn more about the event and REGISTER TO VOLUNTEER \n(Scroll to bottom of page and click on March 29 and then select Willowsford as the location)\nIf you are unable to participate on March 29\, LIRA is holding a second Scrape on April 12 with many locations across the county.

SUMMARY:Guided Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Willowsford Conservancy staff and birding enthusiast Scott Harris for a guided Bird Walk! As part of this walk we’ll pass through some of the Conservancy’s forests\, wetlands\, and grasslands\, which offer great habitat for a diversity of bird species. Whether you are a seasoned birder or a curious beginner\, this bird walk is suitable for all and open to the public. \nLeading this this walk is Scott Harris. Scott has been birding since he was a child growing up in Germany. Today\, he’s the founder and general manager of Catoctin Creek Distillery in Purcellville\, Virginia\, but in his free-time\, he is an amateur birding enthusiast\, with over 744 species on his life-list. Scott also serves on the board of the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy. \nAttendees should bring binoculars if you have them (we will have a few extra pairs for sharing) and should dress appropriately for the winter weather. Warm layers and sturdy footwear are strongly suggested. Winter is an excellent time for bird watching and birds will still be active even in cold or snowy weather. \nAttendees will meet at the trailhead located at 25359 Grassland Grove Drive in Aldie\, VA. \nFor questions about this event\, contact info@willowsfordconservancy.org
