Farm Breakfast Strata with Bacon and Cheddar

A strata is one of the easiest egg dishes to prepare. What’s more, you can make it the day before, refrigerate overnight and then wow your loved ones with a delicious, freshly baked breakfast in the morning. Add about 15 minutes to the cooking time if the strata goes straight from the fridge into the oven. Serves 4.

4 thick slices dry, baguette, cut into cubes
1 cup chopped, cooked bacon
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
4 farm fresh eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons fresh herbs, dill, basil or parsley
salt to taste
freshly grated nutmeg
freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup finely grated Asiago cheese

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F.
  2. Butter a 1-quart, 2-inch deep baking dish. Add the bread cubes, bacon and cheddar cheese.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, cream, herbs, Asiago cheese, salt, nutmeg and pepper together. Pour the custard over the bread, bacon and cheese in the backing dish.
  4. Bake until the custard is set, about 40 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
