Goings On

Free-Range or Free-Loading Hens? Both!

As many of you have already heard, our hens haven’t quite ramped up production to meet demand so we have to push egg shares back a(nother) week. I assure you, even the farmers aren’t eating eggs. We are stockpiling them for your shares. And we are giving the hens pep talks.

The good news is, more hens are starting to lay each day. Our livestock manager, Alex Hencin, said that we’ve jumped from 15 to 30 to twice that many eggs a day, so once all 800 get going, our shareholders can double up on eggs whenever is convenient for them, and our Farm Stand shelves will be stocked again.

Until then, we are grateful for our friends at Moutoux Orchard for supplying as many dozens of eggs as they can spare this time of year. Rob and Maureen Moutoux, and their wonderful family and crew, manage their whole-diet CSA farm in Purcellville, VA with the same principles that guide us here at Willowsford.
