From the Farmer

Week 22 – 10/8/2013

In the Share This Week

Roots.  We’ve got turnips, we’ve got radishes, we’ve got potatoes, we’ve got sweet potatoes.  Kohlrabi is not technically a root (it’s an enlarged stem) but close enough.  Have fun!  And make some pumpkin pie for dessert.  Or, carve this one and buy one of Kate’s.

At the Farm Stand

Cider: we have half gallons ($4) and gallons ($7) of apple cider, and quarts ($3) of organic cider, all from just up Route 15 in Pennsylvania.  We have an expanded selection of cheese this week – special goat cheeses and sheep cheese to go with chevre, cheddar and asiago.  We also have small chocolate milks, ice cream, and… whoopie pies are here.  Kate is baking fall pies, cheesecakes, and veggie pot pies.  Come get them!  And check the Facebook for updates and specials.

CSA and Farm Stand: Back to Our Regularly Scheduled Time and Place

Special thanks to Saturday CSA members who came a little further south to pick up your shares.  We hope those of you who came to Saturday’s Taste of Willowsford event enjoyed your time.  We did – the food, especially.  Design Cuisine, the event’s caterers, bought in to the connections we try to make here at the farm.  They used local and seasonal ingredients in each dish (well, not the lemonade but what else goes with iced tea?  There should be exceptions to every rule) and worked closely with us to source those ingredients: New Asbury lamb and Mount Vernon Grassfed (soon to change their name to Heritage Hollow Farm) beef for sliders and sausages, Kate’s pies and cheesecakes (good god they’re back for Fall) for desserts, Cherry Glen and Oak Spring Dairy for cheese, and our own veggies and eggs.

Taste of Willowsford has become an annual event here and is an opportunity not just to draw attention to the community and to our farm, but to the concept of a mixed, working landscape that we’re a part of.  Combining agriculture and community so intimately tastes pretty good.

Have a good week and be great,
