From the Farmer

Week 13 – 8/6/2013

Share Notes

Reminder: If you have not yet received last week’s perk – a non-resident pool pass good for a day at one of the Willowsford pools – ask the Farm Stand cashier or staff at the Boat House for one this week.

Happy Gardening Hour: We’re back to our regular 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM volunteer hours this week and due to popular demand, will be spending our last hour (6:00 PM – 7:00 PM) tending to the goats and chickens up at the farm.

Saturday at the Farm Stand: Trickling Springs Ice Cream Sampling.

Local ice cream! Trickling Springs Creamery uses milk from local, family farms that take the best care of their animals and land, to produce small-batch, organic and all natural dairy products for our region. The cows graze grassy pastures and are not pushed in growth or production by synthetic hormones.

A local sales representative will be offering ice cream samples at the Farm Stand from 10:00am-2:00pm and on hand to answer any questions you may have about their products and practices. We’ll also have plenty of ice cream available for sale.

Thanks for the great Tomato Sauce Taste Test Turnout!  Voting was close and we’re down to hand counting absentee ballots.  A final winner will be announced soon!

Peaches and corn at the Farm Stand

This week may bring our last Wednesday peaches, as our peach-friends are going to a Friday-only delivery.  We expect to have them for the foreseeable future on Saturdays.  We’re working on a Wednesday supplier!

Corn may also be in short supply this week.  Have we talked about corn?  Very hard to grow without chemicals, and the folks who do it usually sell it at their own farmer’s and retail markets.  We’re still looking for the right people to partner with until we grow it ourselves.

No slicers Yes Picklers.

One thing about picklers is that you can, of course, use them like a slicer.  But they’re stubby and fit in a jar real well.  And we have a lot of them.  This is the season to try your hand at putting summer in a jar for later in the year.  Please let us know if you want a larger quantity; great deals on a 20 lb. box.

That’s all for this week.  Be great!

Mike
