This week is a very exciting week here at the Farm. As many of you know, the Farm lost several managers this Spring and we’ve been working diligently to continue operating smoothly as we’ve searched for the right managerial fit moving forward. We are so excited to announce that we officially have a new Farm Manager on board! Collin Thompson is joining us from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Originally from the fertile land surrounding Decorah, Iowa, agriculture has been a passion of Collin’s for many years. He has been involved in small-scale diversified agriculture as a farmer, builder, educator, researcher, volunteer, and consultant. He has worked on farms around the world, most recently serving as part of the management team of a four-season organic vegetable farm in NE Iowa. Collin was most recently the Farm Manager at The North Farm in Michigan and is already expressing his disbelief at the warm October weather that Virginia has to offer 😊 Make sure to join us at The Farm Garden on Sunday Oct 28th from 5PM to 7PM for a Farm Potluck and welcome Collin to Willowsford!
This week in the field we are planting our strawberry plants for next season. We plant berries in the fall to give them some time to establish roots, put on a little growth, and settle in before the winter comes. The plants die back over the winter but they are able to come on strong when spring arrives, and temperatures warm up. After we finish planting strawberries we will begin prepping for our garlic planting for the coming season which will be the last planting of the year!
