Each season, we welcome several hundred laying hens to our farm, where they forage fresh pastures and fallow vegetable fields by day, and tuck into their mobile coops each night. If you’re new to farm eggs, you’ll see immediately that their access to fresh forage and veggies makes for a deep orange yolk and a noticeably rich texture in both breakfast and baked goods!
On top of what they consume foraging in the fields, our laying hens receive a non-GMO feed and natural minerals that help keep them and their egg shells strong and healthy.
We move the flock of chickens throughout the farm property within portable electric fencing, to keep them safe from predators. Their mobile coops allow shelter and safety as well as a clean, dry place to lay eggs for our customers.
Both our CSA program and the Farm Stand source chickens from Whiffletree Farm in Warrenton, VA. Whiffletree Farm and proprietor Jesse Straight are deeply committed to humane livestock practices, including pasture access. We are proud to partner with other farms that share our high standards for animal health and welfare.
As with our vegetables, eggs are available as CSA shares and at the Farm Stand. Signing up before the season begins allows us to plan how many animals to raise, and CSA commitments are filled before the Farm Stand is stocked. Farm-fresh eggs are an easy way to taste (and see!) the difference between local food and mass-produced grocery items.
