Blue bird monitoring is an easy\, flexible\, and rewarding volunteer opportunity that is great for individuals\, families\, or high school students seeking volunteer hours. We’ll be happy to set up a time for individual training and answer any questions you have. \nWhy monitor bluebird boxes?\nMonitoring bluebird boxes allows conservationists\, bird enthusiasts\, and researchers to gather valuable data on nesting success and population health of bluebirds. Bluebirds are cavity nesters\, however they aren’t the only one and monitoring boxes allows us to gain insight on the predators and competitors that bluebirds are facing at their nests. Bluebirds are tolerant of human presence and proper monitoring does not disrupt the nest. Beyond helping with science\, it is a rewarding and fulfilling way to connect with nature!

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count: Willow Lake Walkaround
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we want to encourage our community to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) to help scientists monitor bird populations\, migration patterns\, and more! Started in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society\, this event allows birdwatchers to contribute valuable data on the health and distribution of various bird species. This year the GBBC takes place from February 14 to 17. \nTo kick off the GBBC\, we’ll be hosting a short walk around Willow Lake to submit our first bird list of the count! This is a fun opportunity to start your day with some fresh air and get acquainted with how the GBBC works so you can participate all weekend long. To participate in this walk\, sign up below and meet at the Willowsford Boat House at 8:30AM. Be sure to dress warm and bring binoculars if you have them! This walk should be fairly quick\, taking not much longer 30 minutes. \n— \nHow to Participate in the GBBC \nTo participate\, all you need is a way to observe birds—whether it’s from your window\, your porch\, or along any of the trails throughout Willowsford. You can count birds at any time during the event\, and there’s no need to commit to every day. The more people who contribute\, the more accurate the data\, which can be used by scientists to inform important conservation efforts. \nStep 1: Select a spot to watch birds. This can be your backyard\, on a trail\, or in a park. Just about anywhere in Willowsford will work! Here’s a couple recommendations: \nStep 2: Watch Birds for 15 minutes or more at any time between February 14 to 17. \nStep 3: Identify all the birds you see or hear. This may sound daunting to new and first-time birders\, but we promise it’s not hard! Our favorite tool is the Merlin Bird ID app. Download it before you get started and IDing your findings will be a breeze. \nStep 4: Upload your data. The easiest ways to do this is through the Merlin app mentioned above or the eBird Mobile App. If you prefer to not use an app\, you can also upload from your computer. Each hunter is here to serve the community through volunteer service hours and serve the environment through population management. Participating hunters abide by county and state regulations and a stringent set of rules that Willowsford Conservancy sets. \nOur program is guided by recommendations from a 3-year browse study conducted by the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Conservancy open space. After several years of utilizing this management tool\, we are already seeing improvements in the health of our forest understories!

SUMMARY:Deer Management: Trails Closed in The Grant\, The Greens\, & The Grove
DESCRIPTION:Willowsford Conservancy’s deer management program continues this year throughout Willowsford.  Following VA state guidelines\, archery hunting on Conservancy property will be underway October 5 – January 11 in The Grant\, The Grange\, The Grove\, and The Greens between ½ hour before sunrise to 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to ½ hour after sunset.   All trails will remain open during archery hunting. \nTrails will be closed during brief firearms hunting periods in The Greens\, The Grant\, and portions of The Grove along with the Archery Range. \n\nMonday 12pm – Friday 12pm\, November 4-8th\, 2024\nWednesday – Saturday (All Day)\, November 20-23rd\, 2024\nMonday 12pm – Friday 12pm\, December 9-13th\, 2024\nWednesday – Saturday (All Day)\, January 8-11\, 2025\n\nWe achieve these objectives through a group of trained and licensed hunters who volunteer in the program. Each hunter is here to serve the community through volunteer service hours and serve the environment through population management. Participating hunters abide by county and state regulations and a stringent set of rules that Willowsford Conservancy sets. \nOur program is guided by recommendations from a 3-year browse study conducted by the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Conservancy open space. After several years of utilizing this management tool\, we are already seeing improvements in the health of our forest understories!

DESCRIPTION:Community Carrot Harvest \nJoin the Farm Team on November 12th and 13th for a carrot harvesting! Drop in anytime on these days during our two time blocks: 8:30am-12pm or 1pm-3:30pm to help pull and top carrots in the field. This is a fun activity for all ages to get their hands dirty and connect with the Farm. Be prepared to get dirty and be sure to wear close-toed shoes\, long pants\, and bring gloves if you have them! \nCarrot harvesting is hugely dependent on both weather and soil conditions\, please be sure to register below so we can notify you if our harvesting schedule needs to change!  \n
