SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we want to encourage our community to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) to help scientists monitor bird populations\, migration patterns\, and more! Started in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society\, this event allows birdwatchers to contribute valuable data on the health and distribution of various bird species. This year the GBBC takes place from February 13 to 16.  \nGetting involved in the Great Backyard Bird Count is easy and anyone can do it! To participate\, all you need is a way to observe birds—whether it’s from your window\, your porch\, or along any of the trails throughout Willowsford. You can count birds at any time during the event\, and there’s no need to commit to every day. The more people who contribute\, the more accurate the data\, which can be used by scientists to inform important conservation efforts. \nStep 1: Select a spot to watch birds. This can be your backyard\, on a trail\, or in a park. Just about anywhere in Willowsford will work! Here’s a couple recommendations:  \n\nWillow Lake in The Greens\nPinewoods Loop Trail in The Grove\nWet Meadow in The Grange\nAllen Farm Pond in The Grant\n\nStep 2: Watch Birds for 15 minutes or more at any time between February 13 to 16.  \nStep 3: Identify all the birds you see or hear. This may sound daunting to new and first-time birders\, but we promise it’s not hard! Our favorite tool is the Merlin Bird ID app. Download it before you get started and IDing your findings will be a breeze.  \nStep 4: Upload your data. The easiest ways to do this is through the Merlin app mentioned above or the eBird Mobile App. If you prefer to not use an app\, you can also upload from your computer. Visit birdcount.org for instructions.

SUMMARY:Guided Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Update 2/12/26: This walk has been cancelled due to poor trail conditions. We hope to host another soon\, keep an eye on our calendar for the next one. All registrants should have received an email with the cancellation notice.  \n——— \nJoin Conservancy Staff for a guided bird walk to celebrate the Great Backyard Bird Count. This walk will start at the Bull Run Trailhead located at Poplar Pond in The Greens. The walk will be around 2 miles long and will take us approximately 1 hour to complete. The hardwood forests along this trail offer the perfect habitat for seeing a variety of species including woodpeckers\, owls\, songbirds\, and more. \nWhen: Saturday\, February 14th 9am-10am \nWhere: We will meet at the trailhead at Poplar Pond located on the corner of Grassland Grove Drive and Tulip Poplar Place. We will hike approximately 1 mile along Bull Run to the Rock Garden feature before retracing our steps back to Poplar Pond. View the trail map here. \nWhat to bring: Wear warm clothes for the weather. (Even if temperatures are cold\, birds can still be very active!) Bring binoculars if you have them\, if not we’ll have a extra pair or two we can all share. Wear sturdy shoes like sneakers or hiking boots. \nRSVP below!\n\nThis month\, we want to encourage our community to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) to help scientists monitor bird populations\, migration patterns\, and more! SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Night Hike
DESCRIPTION:Update: This walk has been moved from February 20th to March 6th as it looks like our amphibian neighbors need a little longer to wake up after how cold winter has been this year! See you then! \n—- \nJoin Conservancy staff to explore some of our vernal pools and learn about our local amphibians for this vernal pool hike! Vernal pools are essential breeding habitat for many of our native amphibians and breeding season is here. Learn about what a vernal pool is\, why the habitat is important\, and about some of our local amphibians that use it. While looking in our pools\, participants will help us collect data that will help the Conservancy start tracking vernal pools and amphibian breeding activity here in Willowsford. \nWhile hiking\, we’ll also listen for the American Woodcock. This forest dwelling shorebird migrates through Virginia for breeding this time of year and are very active after dark. They are charismatic bird with a distinctive “peent” call that makes it easy to listen for and track down while hiking after dark. \nWhen: Friday\, February 20th from 6:30-8PM (**Subject to change based on weather conditions\, read note below**) \nWhere: We will meet at Spring Peeper Pond in The Greens (see map). Parking is available along Grassland Grove Drive. \nWhat to bring: If you have a headlamp\, bring it! We will have some extras to share but may not have enough for everyone. Otherwise\, wear sturdy close-toed shoes (boots are best\, especially since we will be around the waters edge) and dress for the weather. This hike will be rain or shine (light rain would actually be ideal for this hike). \nA couple notes: \n\nOften when it comes to amphibian breeding\, they are post active on nights that are warm and wet. Our ideal night for observing amphibians will be one where the air temperature is above 40 degrees and there was been recent rain. If the conditions look like they will be exceptionally cold and dry on February 20th\, we will reschedule.  Registrants will be emailed updates if the date changes so be sure to check your email as the date approaches!\nOur hike will be about 1.5 miles and I estimate will take us about 1.5 hours to complete. However\, we expect to see the most amount of amphibian activity nearest to Spring Peeper Pond at the beginning of the program so if you’d prefer to leave early or skip the hike\, please feel free to.\nChildren under the age of 16 are very welcome but must be accompanied by an adult\nDuring mating season\, some frogs can be LOUD. If you are very sensitive to loud noises\, consider bringing hearing protection like ear plugs just in case they choose to be loud on this day.\n\nSpots are limited\, RSVP below!
