All About Pears
Common VArietieS
Pears like apples come in a variety of sizes, colors and flavors. Th ere are two main varieties: bell-shaped European varieties and round apple-crisp Asian pears. Some of the common varieties grown in Virginia include Comice, Bosc, Bartlett, D’Anjou pears and the miniature Seckel pear. Juicy sweet, brown Asian pears are also readily available from local orchards.
What to Look For
Ripe pears should yield to very slight pressure at the neck and have a pleasant floral aroma. Color varies according to variety. Choose firm, well-shaped pears that feel heavy for their size. When selecting pears for the week, choose a few that are very firm as they will ripen beautifully off the tree.
easY storage anD PreParatIon
Store under ripe pears at room temperature then if necessary refrigerate for a day or two when ripe. Once cut, pears will turn brown. A sprinkle of lemon juice helps to hold their creamy white color.
Best Uses
Asian pears add crunch when sliced into salads. Aromatic Comice pears are gorgeous paired with soft cheeses such as brie or blue. Bosc, Bartlett and D’Anjou pears are snack and lunch staples. For baking, the texture of Bosc and D’Anjou pears can’t be beat. Little Seckel pears are terrific for poaching and pickling.
